Math Specific Technology - 8/3/15
Technological resources and tools all have their place in the math classroom. Let's explore a few math specific tech tools that can aid in understanding, application and "good 'ol fun" integration in your classroom this year!!
Warm-Up: What word comes to mind when you think about technology in the math classroom? Submit each word individually below.
Activity 1: Desmos
Desmos is a robust online graphing calculator with the ability to create colorful, engaging educational graphs using mathematical practices, as well as some fun, creative pictures. Teachers also have the ability to create lessons/activities such as the two below.
Geogebra
Geogebra is another online graphing platform, that allows you to free draw figures and shapes. They have a vast library of pre-made lessons that are easily modified but it's fairly easy to create your own. Below is an example of one I created for my Geometry class as an introduction to Special Right Triangles. The associated worksheet can be found here.
Activity 2: TenMarks
TenMarks is handsdown one of my favorite math specific tech tools! Just click the link to see for yourself!
Activity 3: National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (NLVM)
Broken down by grade bands and standard topics, the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (NLVM), offers "a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-12 emphasis)."
Click the NLVM Link and research a manipulative you may use in one of your lessons. Once finished, share your thoughts here.
